The history of the Shroud of Turin, this centuries old linen cloth bearing the image of a man with markings on his body consistent with the wounds of being scourged and crucified, is itself a matter of great controversy. The iconic cloth we now know by that name, was first exhibited in Liry, France, 1355, but it wasn't until 1578 when the Shroud was finally moved to Turin. The true age of this 14.5 x 3.5 ft.  linen cloth is still under investigation and though there have been various scientific efforts to date the Shroud, certitude has been elusive. The Catholic Church refers to the Shroud as an "icon".

L'histoire du Suaire de Turin, un tissue qui date d’au moins plusieurs siècles, et qui montre l’image d’un homme portant les plaies de quelqu’un qui a souffert une flagellation et s'est fait crucifier, est demeure aujourd’hui un sujet fort controversé. Le Suaire de Turin a été mis en exposition pour la première fois à Liry en France dans l’année 1355, mais ce n’était pas avant l’année 1578 que le suaire a été transféré à Turin. Le véritable âge du suaire qui mesure 14.4 x 3.5 pieds, est encore sous enquête. Malgré plusieurs tests scientifiques pour trouver la date d’origine de cet article, celle-ci toujours obscure. L’Église Catholique Romaine considère le Suaire de Turin une “icône”.
